Relief for Back Pain, Headaches and Migraines
Massage therapy can do wonders for stress, injury recovery and even pregnancy. Here are three notable types of massage and how they work:
Swedish massage - Swedish massage, a mainstay of spas throughout the world, does more than just relax the muscles and reduce stress. The long strokes used by the therapist increase blood flow near the skin surface, bringing not only a feeling of warmth but also a rush of oxygen and nutrients essential for tissue repair. At the same, this enhanced circulation enables inflammatory substances to be removed from sore or injured tissues. Loosening the muscles can also relieve stress-triggered headaches and migraines.
Deep tissue massage - Deep tissue massage lives up to its name by probing deeply into the muscles and connective tissues to relieve severe or chronic pain and stiffness. Much of this discomfort may stem from adhesions, collections of scar tissue that cause muscles, fascia and other tissues to get stuck together instead of moving freely. Adhesions related to a personal injury may also prevent the injury from healing completely. Deep tissue massage aims to release these tissues so they can function normally again.Pregnancy massage - Pregnancy massage often employs the same long strokes used in Swedish massage to relieve the swelling and muscle strain associated with changes in the mother's body, though it may also borrow of other techniques as needed. The therapist may use special cushions or wedges to help the patient rest safely and comfortably during the procedure. Many mothers find that pregnancy massage helps them sleep better and experience less back pain.
